HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c19W
39. Mr. Stevens

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what action he is taking to reduce the waiting time for driving tests.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We have been acting to reduce the waiting lists for driving tests. The number of examiners has been increased by 180—14 per cent.—since the beginning of 1985. Queues for tests have been brought down on average from 18 weeks to 15 weeks. They are still too long. We aim by continuing recruitment of examiners to reduce the average to 11 weeks this year.
