§ Mr. Tom Clarkeasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish in the Official Report the information available to him on the numbers of children under the age of 16 years who are registered as handicapped in each local authority in England.
§ Mrs. CurrieInformation on the numbers of persons registered as handicapped is collected centrally every three to four years and the latest complete data are found in the Department's publications, "Registered Blind and Partially Sighted Persons at 31 March 1982" (A/F82/7), "Registers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at 31 March 1983" (A/F83/20) and "Registers of Physically Disabled Persons at 31 March 1984" (A/F84/19), copies of which have been placed in the Library.
Information about the sensorily impaired groups as at 31 March 1986 is currently being collected. This information is not yet complete, but the available data about persons under 16 are given in the table.
Registration may not be a reliable guide to the numbers of persons handicapped as registration is voluntary, registers may not always be amended to reflect migration or deaths and people with multiple handicaps may be on more than one register.
Data are not collected centrally on the numbers of persons registered as mentally handicapped.
