To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he hopes to make a statement on the funding of university research.

Mr. Jackson

My right hon. Friend announced on 3 December the Government's revised expenditure plans for universities and the science budget. He is currently considering advice from the Advisory Board for the Research Councils on the allocation of the science budget and he will make a statement on that as soon as possible.

The Government are also considering the recommendations in the ABRC's discussion document "A Strategy for the Science Base" and the many comments on them received during the recently concluded consultative exercise. My right hon. Friend will announce the Government's conclusions on policy for the science base in 1988.
