Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the average number of days on remand for both scheduled and non-scheduled offences together and the total number of persons remanded in custody before trial for both scheduled and non-scheduled offences together; and what was number of bail applications refused for(a) scheduled offences, (b) non-scheduled offences and (c) both together in the first half of 1987.

[holding answer 11 December 1987]: In the first six months of 1987, 874 persons were remanded in custody, 235 bail applications were refused in respect of persons charged with scheduled offences, and 110 in respect of persons charged with non-scheduled offences. The average length of time spent on custodial remand for those who were tried in the period and who were in custody at the date of the trial was 122 days.

[holding answer 11 December 1987]: Eight hundred and seventy-four persons were remanded in custody during the period, 501 of whom were charged with scheduled offences and 373 with non-scheduled offences.
