HC Deb 18 December 1987 vol 124 c910W
Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the number of post mortems done at the request of the coroner in National Health Service hospitals in each year since 1980.

Mrs. Currie

I regret that the exact information requested is not available from the registration of deaths. However, the table shows the available statistics on the number of deaths occurring in National Health Service hospitals certified by coroners following post mortem which can be provided without incurring disproportionate cost.

Number of deaths occurring in National Health Service hospitals certified by coroners following post mortem England and Wales 1986
Place of death Number
National Health Service psychiatric hospitals 1,409
Other National Health Service hospitals and institutions for the care of the sick 55,752
TOTAL 57,161

Mr. Galbraith

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the cost in(a) fees to consultants and (b) payments to health boards for post mortems done at the request of the coroner in National Health Service hospitals for each year since 1980.

Mrs. Currie

I regret that this information is not available centrally.
