To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the latest figure for the number of staff presently employed in the press and public relations office of his Department; and what is the number planned to be employed at this point in 1988.

The number of staff currently employed in press and public relations in the Department of Transport is 17.

The number planned to be employed at this point in 1988 is 18.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1987–88 by his Department on(a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material; and what are the estimated expenditures in each area for 1988–89.

The estimated spending by the Department of Transport for 1987–88 is as follows:

Detailed decisions have not yet been taken on expenditure by media for 1988–89, but the overall publicity figure is expected to be £5 million.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure on press and public relations for(a) 1987–88 and (b) 1988–89.

Mr. Channon

The latest estimate for expenditure on press and public relations for 1987–88 is £373,000. The planned level of expenditure for next year is £400,000 at current prices. These figures cover the overall cost of running the press office function calculated using Her Majesty's Treasury ready reckoner for staff and other costs.
