HL Deb 15 December 1987 vol 491 c713WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have concerning the construction by the Soviet Union of a large aircraft carrier in a yard in the Black Sea and whether they are able to confirm reports that the carrier in question is not now expected to carry fixed-wing aircraft.

Lord Trefgarne

A large aircraft carrier is fitting out at Nikolayev in the Black Sea. The type of aircraft to be embarked is still unknown, but the size of ship would permit a range of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft to be carried.
