Mr. George

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many(a) ministerial statements, (b) private notice questions, (c) debates on Government motions, (d) debates on Opposition motions, (e) debates on Adjournment (half-hour), (f) debates on Adjournment (other than half hour), (g) debates on statutory instruments and (h) other debates which took place in each of the last six parliamentary Sessions, required the attendance in the House of Ministers or officials in his Department.

Information is not readily available in the precise form requested, which could only be provided at disproportionate cost. However the following details have been drawn from departmental statistics front both the diplomatic and aid wings of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office:

allowance for attending meetings on parliamentary business and (d) allowance per mile for travel on parliamentary business, expressed in (i) £ sterling and (ii) European currency units.

The salary of United Kingdom Members of the European Parliament is £18,500. The figures supplied by the European Parliament for allowances paid to MEPs are as followsTravel allowance:

  • 0.56 ecu (40p) per kilometre for the first 400 kilometres.
  • 0.28 ecu (20p) per kilometre thereafter.
Daily subsistence away from home on parliamentary business: 148 ecu (£106). Office allowance (including travel within home country on parliamentary business): 2,129 ecu (£1,530) per month. Research and Secretarial allowance: 3,446 ecu (£2,480) per month, paid directly to employee against a contract.
