Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish tables showing the number of notified vacancies per registered unemployed person in(a) Scotland, (b) Wales, (c) England, (d) the United Kingdom and(e) each of the English regions for June 1979, June 1980, June 1981, June 1982, June 1983, June 1984, June 1985, June 1986, June 1987 and November 1987.

Following is the available information. The table shows the number of unfilled vacancies at jobcentres, and the number of unemployed claimants, in each of the requested areas, for June of each year since 1980. Vacancy figures for June 1979 are not available on a comparable basis, while figures for November 1987, will not be available until 17 December 1987. All the figures are seasonally adjusted, and the unemployment figures allow for changes in coverage.

It is not valid to compare ratios of notified vacancies to unemployment, since roughly only about a third of vacancies in the economy are reported to jobcentres, and this proportion will tend to vary over time and between regions.
