To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many working days were lost through strikes in October 1987; and what were the comparable figures in October 1978.

The number of working days lost through stoppages of work due to industrial disputes in October 1987 is not yet available. The latest month for which figures are available is September 1987 in which 45,000 working days are provisionally recorded as lost. The comparable figures in September and October 1978 were 878,000 and 1,857,000 respectively.
