HC Deb 03 December 1987 vol 123 cc642-3W
Mr. Alan W. Williams

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to the proportion of fossil fuel power stations that have been fitted with flue gas desulphurisation equipment in (i) west Germany and (ii) Sweden; and what is the figure for the United Kingdom.

Mr. Moynihan

Information on control technology in operation in the Federal Republic of Germany and in Sweden is contained in the major review of national strategies and policies for air pollution abatement, published this year by the Executive Body for the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. A copy of the report("National Strategies and Policies for Air Pollution Abatement" (paragraph 50). Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, United Nations, New York, 1987) has been placed in the Library of the House.

At present, no power stations in the United Kingdom are so equipped, but the Central Electricity Generating Board plans to retrofit 6,000 MW of generating capacity with flue gas desulphurisation equipment during the next 10 years. Furthermore, all new fossil fuel fired power stations will be required to have the technology to control sulphur emissions.
