§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the Official Report the 65W amount of building society holdings in each of the past five years and to date; how many registered building societies there are in the United Kingdom; and how often he meets representatives of the Building Societies Association.
§ Mr. Ian Stewart[pursuant to his reply, 27 April 1987]: The most recent information available is for the end of 1985. At that time there was a total of 171 registered building societies in the United Kingdom. The figures showing the total assets of building societies for the period 1981–85 are as follows:
