HL Deb 27 April 1987 vol 486 c1351WA
Lord Fanshawe of Richmond

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will amend the National Heritage Act 1980 to enable local authority and university museums, or any public institution recommended by the Museums and Galleries Commission, to secure government indemnity cover for works of art, manuscripts or museum objects owned by them in transit to and from and while at restoration premises approved by the Museums and Galleries Commission.

Lord Belstead

The National Heritage Act 1980, under Section 16(3), already enables any institution, body or person approved by the Minister for the purposes of the Act to secure indemnity cover for objects in transit to and from and whilst at restoration premises approved by the Minister on the advice of the Museums and Galleries Commission, provided that certain conditions are complied with. Amendment of the present Act is therefore unnecessary.
