Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the number of travel passes given to applicants living in Scotland to allow visits to relatives in prison in Scotland and England, respectively, for the latest convenient period for which figures are available and the total cost to his Department of such passes in the same period.

Mr. Lyell

During the period 1 March 1987 to 31 March 1987 the Department issued 349 travel warrants to applicants living in Scotland; 301 were for visits to Scottish prisons and 48 to English prisons. The total value of the warrants was £6,720.15.
