Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list in the Official Report the level of debt service payments to the United Kingdom, Her Majesty's Government and commercial banks, from all developing countries in 1985, both in cash terms and as a proportion of the total of such payments to the world.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The information is not available.

Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his answer of 29 January, Official Report, column 472, to the hon. and learned Member for Leicester, West (Mr. Janner), if he will state the level of total aid flows to the 29 poorest countries in Africa, and the level of debt service payments from those countries in 1984.

Mr. Ian Stewart

OECD estimate that in 1984 total aid flows to the 29 poorest countries in sub-Saharan Africa were $6.5 billion. Debt service payments (including interest on short term debt but excluding IMF repurchases) were $3.4 billion.
