HC Deb 06 April 1987 vol 114 cc82-3W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing by personal category and range of income the number of women with gross unearned income of £1,000 a year or more, and those with less, together with the average amount of unearned income in each category.

Mr. Norman Lamont

[pursuant to his reply, 23 March 1987, c. 41]: The estimates given in the table below are based on a projection from the 1984–85 survey of personal incomes and they are therefore provisional. Since the survey does not provide comprehensive coverage of investment income on which the liability to basic rate tax has been satisfied at source, the estimates for the ranges other than the higher income ranges are likely to be incomplete.

table. They are based on a projection from the 1984–85 survey of personal incomes and are therefore provisional. Some income ranges have been combined in order to provide reliable estimates. Since the survey does not provide comprehensive coverage of investment income on which the liability to basic rate tax has been satisfied, the estimates for the ranges other than the higher income ranges are likely to be incomplete.
