HC Deb 02 April 1987 vol 113 c576W
Mr. Radice

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has to promote the playing of chess in schools.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

The Government have no specific plans to promote the playing of chess in schools as this is a matter for schools themselves. However, the Department provides a regular grant towards the administrative costs of the British Chess Federation which aims to encourage the study and practice of chess, and we would wish to see as many young people as possible being given the opportunity to play.
