asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what further action he is taking to improve education standards.

All the Government's education policies are in pursuance of my right hon. Friend's main aim, which is to improve standards throughout the education service and increase the value obtained from the substantial resources allocated to it.

Details of many of the Government's initiatives to improve standards, and the practical measures taken and planned to give them effect, were set out in the White Papers "Better Schools" (Cmnd. 9469) and "Working Together—Education and Training" (Cmnd. 9823).
