§ Mr. Speedasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what proportion and value of plant and equipment being purchased for the Nissan car plant is manufactured in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. Giles ShawInformation in the precise form requested is not available. However, up until September 1986, capital expenditure in the United Kingdom on the Nissan project has amounted to £43.5 million which represents 84 per cent. of the total expenditure so far.
§ Mr. Boyesasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he has been involved in any discussions with the Nissan Motor Co. in the Houghton and Washington constituency regarding United Kingdom companies and tendering for materials in the manufacturing process.
§ Mr. Giles Shaw[pursuant to his reply, 24 October 1986]: Nissan's individual purchasing decisions are a commercial matter for the company themselves. However, it is the mutual objective of Nissan and the Government that the Sunderland project should contribute to the development of long-term collaboration between Nissan and the local components and other supplying industries. Nissan intend to provide the maximum practicable opportunity for local manufacturers to compete for orders and we naturally encourage this.
