§ Mr. McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the application of performance-related benefits for general managers in the National Health Service; if he will consider applying performance related benefits to other national Health Service workers; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. NewtonThe scheme whereby general managers in the National Health Service are eligible for performance-related pay is innovatory. We shall therefore monitor its operation closely before taking any decisions about extending its application to other staff in the service. Under the present scheme, the performance of general managers will be assessed in April 1987 against pre-agreed objectives. The first payments under the scheme will not be made until September 1987.
