HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 cc808-9W
Sir David Price

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will publish in the Official Report details of his disinfestation programme to prevent rabies from crossing the channel through a Channel tunnel: and if he will make a statement on how secure such arrangements will be.

Mr. Donald Thompson

In discussions with Eurotunnel, the promoters of the Channel fixed link, Ministry officials have set out the requirements to prevent rabies entering the country through a Channel tunnel.

In addition to the use of sealed trains, Eurotunnel have agreed to the installation of physical barriers and grids at entry points, regular inspections, rigorous cleaning programmes and the continuous deployment of baited traps in both tunnel and terminal areas. Obviously discussions are still in progress. However the Government will insist on diligent application of these safeguards to ensure that they are fully effective.
