Friend announced on 6 November at column490 that he would be willing to provide some further additional funding for academic pay restructuring in the universities if structural improvements could be agreed at a cost that could be afforded, and that he would be initiating discussions to that end. These discussions have only recently begun: it is not yet possible to say how long they will take or what the outcome will be.
