§ Mr. Chris Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what incentives Her Majesty's Government provide to industry aimed at preventing or reducing the discharge of hazardous substances into the aqueous environment.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThe United Kingdom observes the "polluter pays" principle and therefore does not give specific incentives to industry to reduce discharges of dangerous substances to the aquatic environment. However, where expenditure on pollution control is part of a wider scheme, already attracting some form of industrial grant, it is of course included.
§ Mr. Chris Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will detail the amount of money spent in 1983–84, 1984–85 and 1985–86 on research and development projects designed to produce low or non-waste and low emission or emission-free technologies.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThe Department spent £5.7 million £5.5 million and £5.8 million in the respective years on reseach and development on waste and emission treatment technologies to reduce wastes and emissions released to the environment.
