Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many hospitals have been closed since 1979; if he will list them; how many beds have been closed in them in each case; how many beds have been closed each year since 1979 in wards within hospitals that still remained open; and if he will list the location in each case.

The information we keep centrally records approvals for partial and complete hospital closures. It does not include temporary closures, neither does it give the date on which closures were implemented.
