HC Deb 17 November 1986 vol 105 cc23-4W
Mr. Freeson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department for what purposes it has been alleged to him that Brent council intends to use the 177 posts under section 11 of the Local Government Act 1966; and who made such allegations.

Mr. Waddington

A wide range of allegations have been made about the purposes of these posts. The common thread has been concern that the postholders would be more concerned with the implementation of the council's so-called "anti-racist" policies than with improving the achievement of Commonwealth children in Brent's schools, which was the ground on which section 11 funding was sought and on which approval in principle was given. Following a number of articles in the press, questions have been asked by some hon. Members and a number of individuals have written direct to the Home Office.
