HC Deb 06 November 1986 vol 103 cc507-8W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will express the annual sums made available to sporting organisations in the United Kingdom by the Sports Council in per capita terms relating to the estimated number of active participants in the sports concerned.

Mr. Tracey

The cost of obtaining the information in the form requested would be disproportionate. The Sports Council's annual report gives details of all grants made to governing bodies of sport. To express this in terms of per capita expenditure would not in any event be meaningful. In reaching decisions on applications for grant-aid from a recognised governing body of sport, the council is guided by the extent to which the proposals and activities concerned correspond to its own objectives, and the demonstration of need.
