§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThere are no plans to introduce motorway driving tests. The current driving test provides an adequate assessment of a candidate's basic driving skills. There is no evidence that newly qualified drivers are involved disproportionately in motorway accidents. Safety in general is much better for motorways than other roads.

§ Mr. Peter BottomleyThe information is not collected on a routine basis. Results of a driving test sample survey conducted in 1985 were that 45 per cent. of candidates passed their driving test on the first attempt.
