HC Deb 04 November 1986 vol 103 cc428-9W
40. Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the role and operations of Her Majesty's Forces, including the Ulster Defence Regiment, in support of the civil power in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Stanley

The role of Her Majesty's forces in Northern Ireland is to provide support to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the fight against terrorism. Nine Regular battalions, one Royal Marine Commando and nine battalions of the Ulster Defence Regiment, together with specialist support from other units, such as the Royal Engineers, are currently deployed in the Province. Elements of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force also make an important contribution.
