HC Deb 04 November 1986 vol 103 cc430-1W
Mr. Galley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what estimate he has of the number of people directly and indirectly employed in (a) maintaining the independent nuclear deterrent, (b) the servicing of United States bases in the United Kingdom and (c) the Trident programme.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

It is estimated that(a) 11,000 MOD civilians are directly employed in maintaining the independent nuclear deterrent, (b) United States bases and service men and their British employees provide about 30,000 direct and indirect jobs including those generated by the purchase of goods and services in the United Kingdom, (c) the Trident programme will create an average of 8,000 direct and 7,000 indirect job opportunities throughout its procurement period, rising to 15,000 and 12,000 in the peak years of the programme. The number of people indirectly employed in maintaining the independent nuclear deterrent is not known.
