§ Sir George YoungLocal authorities estimated, in my Department's recent stock condition inquiry, that they needed to spend some £18.8 billion on repairs and improvements to their own housing stock. The 1986 English house condition survey will provide an independent estimate of the condition of the stock as a whole.
§ Mr. Nicholas Wintertonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what estimate he has of the total number of houses that have been in need of (a) some repair, (b) substantial repair or have been (c) unfit for habitation in each of the last 10 years for which figures are available; and what is each of these figures as a percentage of the total housing stock in each of those years.

Friend, the Member for Wanstead and Woodford (Mr. Jenkin), announced on 21 March 1985 that the lives of the development corporations in Aycliffe and Peterlee and in Washington were to be extended until 31 March 1988. In 1981, my right hon. Friend, the Member for Henley (Mr. Heseltine) announced that the development corporations for the other English new towns — Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Telford and Warrington and Runcorn would be wound up in the late 1980s. Further announcements on the wind-up dates for these corporations will be made shortly.
