§ Mrs. Clwydasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the continued observance of the terms of the unratified SALT II treaty by the parties to it; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. RentonThe United Kingdom is not a party to the SALT II treaty, nor do we participate in the standing consultative commission discussions on compliance issues. But Her Majesty's Government attaches great importance to respect for obligations under existing arms control agreements and we have accordingly urged strict compliance with the treaty by both sides. In this context, the United Kingdom has expressed concern that the Russians have not produced answers to American concerns about their compliance record.
