asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) whether he is satisfied with the condition of the road surface on the M3 between junctions 8 and 9 (a) southbound and (b) northbound; and whether he will make a statement;

(2) on what date he expects the M3 southbound between junctions 8 and 9 to be re-opened;

(3) what is the nature of the remedial works being carried out on the southbound carriageway of the M3 between junctions 8 and 9; and to what extent his Department is to meet the costs.

Work is being carried out as normal maintenance in accordance with the arrangements described in my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Derby, North (Mr. Knight) on 2 May. The costs, in the main, will be borne by the contractors.

The road surface meets the Department's specifications.

The southbound carriageway was re-opened to traffic on 15 May. Work on the northbound carriageway is due to start on 28 May after the spring bank holiday and w ill be completed in July.
