Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what information he has on the change in the number of clinical posts at the Institute of Psychiatry in each of the years 1979 to 1986;

(2) what information he has on the number of posts at the Institute of Psychiatry which have fallen vacant in the last two years, and as to how many remain vacant.

The numbers of clinical staff in post at the Institute of Psychiatry at 31 December each year, were as follows:

I understand that there are currently five clinical vacancies at the institute.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the role of the Institute of Psychiatry in the training of doctors, psychologists and nurses in the treatment of psychiatric patients, the mentally handicapped and the elderly.

Mr. Walden

The Institute of Psychiatry is a school of the University of London and a federated institute of the British Postgraduate Medical Federation. In association with the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal hospitals, it provides clinical training in psychiatry. The institute also provides training in clinical psychology. It is a major centre for research into aspects of mental disorder, and offers a range of clinical or laboratory-based higher degree courses.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on the projected deficits of the Institute of Psychiatry in the years (a)1985–86, (b)1986–87, (c)1987–88, (d)1988–89 and (e)1989–1990.
