§ Mr. Lawlerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many staff are currently employed by community relations councils; and what are their costs to the Government in terms of full-time, part-time, Commission for Racial Equality funded, local authority funded and Manpower Services Commission funded, respectively.
§ Mr. WaddingtonI understand from the Commission for Racial Equality that in the financial year 1984–85, the latest period for which the information is readily available, it funded 180 community relations officers and the full-time equivalent of 3½ support staff. In addition, in the same year, the full-time equivalent of 428½ support staff were funded by local authorities, 305 by the Manpower Service Commission, 37 under the youth training scheme and four from other non-Government sources.
The most recent information about cost that is readily available is that given in appendix 10 to the Commission's report for 1984. That shows that the cost to the Commission for Racial Equality was £2,562,795 in 1984–85 and to local authoities £2,854,405 in 1983–84.
The cost to the other organisations is not available centrally.
