HC Deb 24 March 1986 vol 94 cc365-6W
Mr. Bell

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what provisions will be made for teaching swimming to primary pupils in the light of the South Eastern Education and Library Board's elimination of the swimming programme.

Dr. Mawhinney

The Department of Education for Northern Ireland has not yet received details of the south-eastern board's spending plans for 1986–87, but I understand it is the board's intention to discontinue the school swimming programme from the beginning of the 1986–87 school year. Schools already arrange swimming sessions for children outside the board's programme and I hope that many of these arrangements will continue.
