HC Deb 21 March 1986 vol 94 cc318-9W
Mr. Eastham

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has about the use by health authorities of the quality adjusted life years formula for allocating resources between different expenditure priorities; which authorities use such formulae; what criteria are used in applying them; whether the criteria vary from region to region; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hayhoe

I regret this information is not available centrally.

The quality adjusted life year is a qualitative measure of health which is being developed experimentally in various centres mainly, so far, for evaluating new medical developments. No concensus has yet emerged on its practical use by health authorities.
