HC Deb 19 March 1986 vol 94 cc231-2W
24. Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many houses have been purchased by local authorities under the Housing Defects Act since the legislation was passed.

Mr. John Patten

Local authorities in England have reported that some 1,300 dwellings were repurchased under the Act, up to 31 December 1985.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what factors are inhibiting the designation of Boswell houses in Birmingham under the Housing Defects Act; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The Building Research Establishment is currently investigating the condition of Boswell houses. I expect to reach a decision on the question of designation under the Act as soon as I am able to consider BRE's findings, and the other evidence available.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to the extent to which reinstatement of the Boot houses in Birmingham is possible within the financial limits under the Housing Defects Act; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

PRC Homes Ltd. has not yet approved any repair methods for Boot houses and we have no information on the likely cost of repair. When this information becomes available, we will consider whether the expenditure limit for this property type is satisfactory.
