* In Northern Ireland, the services are administered by health and social services boards and presentation of separate hospital and

community health services and personal social services figures therefore involve a calculated attribution of certain costs, especially those for common services.

† No separate record is maintained of pay and price movements within the health service in Northern Ireland. The indices used are those calculated by the Department of Health and Social Security from English data, and which are available only to 1984–85.

‡ Percentage increase in figures adjusted by NHS factors covers the years 1984–85 only.
