HC Deb 18 March 1986 vol 94 c116W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the state of the fishing industry in the Cardigan bay catchment area.

Mr. Mark Robinson

Lobsters are the most important species for the local fishing industry in Cardigan bay. Measures have been introduced since 1981 aimed at conserving stocks of lobsters and scallops, including those in Cardigan bay. The industry will benefit also from improvements to harbour facilities at Aberystwyth, which will enable more fishing vessels to use the harbour and better marketing arrangements to be made there. My right hon. Friend has approved contributions of £100,000 by the Welsh Office and £125,000 by the Development Board for Rural Wales towards the cost of the work at Aberystwyth, which is expected to be finished this summer.
