HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 c79W
Mr. Merchant

asked the Paymaster General how many persons aged (a) 16 years and (b) 17 years are at present engaged in YTS schemes in (i) Newcastle upon Tyne and (ii) England and Wales, in total and as a proportion of the age group.

Mr. Trippier

I regret that the information is not available in the precise form requested. However, at 28 February 1986, the latest date for which statistics are available, there were 2,031 young people of all ages in training on YTS in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In the training division Newcastle area as a whole there were 4,848 young people in training and 245,802 in England and Wales. These two figures represent 65 and 52 per cent. respectively of the young people eligible to join YTS.
