§ Mr. Merchantasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of undergraduate students in receipt of a local education authority maintenance grant (a) who have made an additional claim for travelling expenses and (b) who have received payment as a result of such a claim (i) in England and Wales and (ii) in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the most recent period for which figures are available.
§ Mr. WaldenOf the 178,377 mandatory award holders in England and Wales reimbursed for excess expenses incurred in respect of travel in 1983–84, 1,063 were from Newcastle upon Tyne. Figures for England and Wales are not yet available for 1984–85, but 44 award holders from Newcastle upon Tyne were reimbursed for excess travel expenses in that year. The Department does not collect separate figures in respect of claims and of reimbursements.
