HC Deb 17 March 1986 vol 94 c7W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total of public expenditure on law and order in 1979 and 1985, respectively, as expressed in 1980 prices; and using the same base year, what is the estimated expenditure for each of the next three years.

Mr. Hurd

On the basis of 1980–81 prices, expenditure on law and order services in England and Wales was £2,473 million in 1979–80 and is estimated to be £3,258 million in 1985–86. Using the same basis of 1980–81 prices, planned expenditure for 1986–87 is £3,287 million. No decision has been taken on provision for 1987–88 and 1988–89. The cash figures provisionally included for those years in the Government's expenditure plans 1986–87 to 1988–89 will be reconsidered in this year's public expenditure survey in the light of local authority budgets for 1986–87 and other factors.
