HC Deb 10 March 1986 vol 93 cc340-1W
Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will take special measures to protect unimproved flower meadows such as that at West Mersea, Essex; and what information he has as to the acreage of meadows similar to that at West Mersea now left in Essex.

Mrs. Rumbold

I am satisfied that existing arrangements for notifying and protecting sites of special scientific interest, and for making nature conservation orders where appropriate, are adequate.

I am advised by the Nature Conservancy Council that there are approximately 52.6 hectares—130 acres—of grassland in Essex of the type found at the West Mersea site.
