§ Mr. Michael McNair-Wilsonasked the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his reply on 28 February, Official Report, columns 709–10, if he will clarify the concept of improving the conditioning of intermediate level wastes; and whether this work is to be carried out at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, or by a team from the establishment working elsewhere.
§ Mr. LeeThe work on improving the conditioning of intermediate level waste referred to is examining methods of treating such wastes and containing them within a possible depository. The work involves the nuclear industry, the Radiochemical Inspectorate of the Department of the Environment and the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate of the Health and Safety Executive. The Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, is involved in aspects of this work, but there are no plans for a team from the establishment to do such work elsewhere.
