asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement about the funding of research and development in United Kingdom universities.

Mr. Walden

It is estimated that expenditure on research and development in GB universities by source of funds increased as follows:

In addition a substantial part of UGC equipment grant (£83.6 million in the academic year 1983–84) and Computer Board grant (£32.5 million in the financial year 1983–84) will have been used to support research.
