We maintain a constant vigilance against abuse and fraud. In recent months no new measures have been considered necessary.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his latest estimate of the annual revenue lost from evasion of vehicle excise duty.

The survey carried out by the Department in 1984 showed the revenue loss through evasion to be about 4 per cent.—equivalent to some £99 million gross in 1985–86 excluding recoveries through enforcement.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what was the result of the most recent survey of the extent of evasion of vehicle excise duty; and if he will make a statement.

The survey carried out by the Department in 1984 indicated a gross loss of revenue of about 4 per cent., equivalent to some £99 million in 1985–86. The report on the survey was published on 18 December 1984 and a copy is available in the Library.
