HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 cc41-2W
Mr. Frank Field

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if, pursuant to his statement of 17 June, Official Report, column 909, he will detail those industries, together with the number of workers involved, which might he affected by economic sanctions against South Africa; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alan Clark

Given the composition of our exports to South Africa, it is likely that a significant proportion of the jobs would be in the chemical and engineering industries. However, estimates of the number of jobs involved in trade with South Africa in particular sectors are not available.

Mr. Straw

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will publish deails in the Official Report of the likely effects, in terms of jobs and output in the United Kingdom, of different levels of economic measures against South Africa, and of similar effects arising from a potential loss of markets elsewhere in Africa if no such economic measures are taken.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information requested by the hon. Gentleman is not available.
