Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were employed by the oil industry in Scotland in (a) offshore work and (b) onshore and downstream work at the latest date for which information is available and in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Rifkind

It is not possible to provide a breakdown of employment in the oil industry into offshore and onshore employment. The classification available from census of employment results is as follows:

(a) The extraction al mineral ail and natural gas in Scotland:

Information is not available for the intervening years, nor as yet from the 1984 census of employment.

Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the average weekly wage in (a) Scotland and (b) the North sea oil industry at the latest date for which information is available; and what is the average weekly wage in Scotland not including the earnings of those employed in the oil industry.

Mr. Rifkind

In April 1985, the average gross weekly earnings of full-time male employees on adult rates in Scotland, whose pay was not affected by absence, was(a) £189.7 in all industries; (b)£329.8 in the extraction of mineral oil and natural gas (Activity heading 1300); and (c) £186.5 in industries excluding those in Activity heading 1300. These figures are derived from the new earnings survey, and are consequently subject to sampling error.

Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people are employed in the oil rig and module production yards in Scotland; and if he will give the corresponding figure in each of the last five years.
