HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 c27W
Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many military education committees are in existence; and where are their functions.

Mr. Freeman

"Military education committee" is the term used to describe the committee which supervises UOTC training at a university. There are 19 of these committees composed of senior members of academic staff and the commanding officers of service units connected with the university. The duties of the committees are:

  • To promote defence studies.
  • To supervise UOTC or other Service units at the University.
  • To make recommentations for the appointments of Honorary Colonels and Commanding Officers.
  • To request the appointment of regular training Majors.
  • To liaise with the Services on matters affecting the UOTC.
  • To liaise with COMEC (the co-ordinating committee for military education committees).
