HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 cc60-1W
Mr. Iain Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will take steps to include in the police accident report form Stats 19 provision for the accurate recording of traffic accidents in which horses are involved; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The only animals explicitly noted in Stats 19 road accident reports are dogs. Horses are included with "other animals". This category features in one half of 1 per cent. of all accidents. The Stats 19 system is currently under review and this aspect will be considered.

Mr. Iain Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many horses-related traffic accidents have occurred since 1976 in the United Kingdom by region.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The only available information is for personal injury accidents in Great Britain, where an animal other than a dog is recorded as being present. Horse-related accidents will represent part of this group. Data for years before 1980 can be provided only at disproportionate cost.
